Woodworking is truly an art. This is a very rewarding hobby that can help you express yourself. It’s not simple, but you can learn a lot of great things while doing it. With a little practice, you can really develop the skills needed to create something you are fond of.

Pre-stain conditioners are very important to use while woodworking. Using this conditioner will reduce the amount of blotching or unevenness on your finished project. They smooth the wood and make it possible for the stain to penetrate into the wood evenly.

Stir your finishes or stains rather than shaking them. Stains often have ingredients that settle to the bottom. Shaking the product is likely to lead to a frothy mix that still isn’t properly mixed. Make sure that you stir it thoroughly until the sediments are smoothed out and blended evenly.

TIP! When you apply wood finishes and stains, make sure you stir, not shake them. You need to do this to remix whatever may have separated.

Consider making sanding blocks yourself that you can reuse time and again. Use your scrap pieces of 3/4″ plywood and cut as many blocks as you need for the sandpaper grits you use the most. Your blocks should be 2.5 x 4.75. Use a spray glue on the blocks and the tile square. Stick a block on your cork, then make certain you cut the cork flush with a utility knife. This piece should then fit you hand fairly well and be secure enough to not slip. Lastly, cut the sandpaper to be flush with the cork. Finish by labeling each block.

Gel Stains

Gel stains are the new big thing for staining furniture and other wood projects that need staining. Liquid tends to run after it’s put on, whereas a gel stain sticks to the wood much better. Gel stains also allow for consistent color on pieces since it is thicker.

Keeping a ruler in a pocket can be a good idea, however sometimes it can be frustrating if it falls out. If you purchase a metal ruler, you can keep it in your pocket with a telescoping magnet. The magnet will keep the ruler in your pocket at all times.

TIP! You should have a small ruler on you. Make it a metal ruler and store it alongside your telescoping magnet.

Never use your hand to guide wood through a cut! Instead, a long and thin piece of scrap wood should be used to push your piece through your saw. This will prevent you from inadvertently whacking off your fingers.

Dry fittings prior to glue application are always a good idea. You don’t want any surprises when you do actually have to apply the glue. You’ll be prepared. Dry fitting the pieces together gives you an idea of what pieces go where.

Now apply these tips to your woodworking. You will make mistakes at first, like everyone does, but over time you will get better. Do not allow yourself to get discouraged if things do not start out well because it will take time and dedication to the craft to master it.

You can use a golf tee to help tighten up the hinges of an interior door. Remove the the door and the hinges from the door frame and gently tap a golf tee into each screw hole. Cut the extra golf tee off and install the door again. The screw will be able to bite into the golf tee.
